Very interested to see that Action on Sugar is gaining momentum. In terms of its role in obesity, subsequent cardio-vascular compromise and the precipitator of Type 2 Diabetes, Openhealth have been very vocal in reducing recommended daily intake of sugar. I have said before “Sugar is the Devil”.
Although the World Health Organisation have halved recommended intake from 10% to 5% of our daily calorie intake, experts in the UK are looking to bring that down to just 3%. To give you an idea, a single can of fizzy drink can equate to the suggested allowance of 5%. Scary!
There is also a call to ban vending machines in schools and colleges. Like anything in this world, we seem determined to go from one extreme to the other. Normally I’m not a fan, but in this worthy case, maybe.
As an Osteopath it is my duty to encourage a lifestyle whereby a patient’s body can flourish. I have no doubt that reducing sugar intake would help no end.
